Paris - Pierre et Gilles – Factory of Idols
Paris Philharmonic, 221 Avenue Jean Jaurès, 75019 Paris, France
Since starting out in 1976, Pierre & Gilles have worked endlessly to developed their art collaboration to perfection, creating a perfect hybrid form between painting and photography.
This ‘fabulous (only word you can use really!) exhibition explodes with colour, camp-ness and clarity, with the theme of music running right through the exhibition, there’s even an exciting playlist running alongside and accompanying all of the art pieces, uplifting the atmosphere like a giant jukebox.
Icons are featured in most of the works, from, pop stars, fashionistas, celebrities to religious Icons, as well as individual rooms dedicated to their heroes and heroines from both French culture and beyond.
With their favourite models posing and photographed in the most amazing and elaborate sets and costumes, photographs are then hand painted and manipulated to create the most fantastic and instantly recognisable final product.
With their work being shown around the world, it seems only right that this time it is situated in the stunning Philharmonie de Paris, apparently “their first monographic exhibition on the theme of music” shown anywhere!
The three separate areas represent three main themes: partying, mythology, and dreams & nightmares, each fabulous in its own right.
A must-see show, if you are living in or visiting Paris before the 23rd February 2020.
