Barbican Centre - Basquiat - Boom for Real
Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS
NYCs 1980s brilliantly pioneering artist born and sadly died before his time (1988). A complete trail blazer, JMs fascinating Barbican exhibition is a real treat, especially if you are a fan of raw expression and the pre-graffiti years.
With more than 100 pieces on show, Basquiat’s work is wide ranging and features self-portraits, original paintings and photography including pieces from the internationally famous SAMO© graffiti duo and work created in conjunction with his close friend Andy Warhol, there’s also a collection of his breath taking oversized canvases who’s content will draw you in for what seems like an eternity.
Apparently this generously sized exhibition is the first major retrospective in the UK ever! And it’s was definitely worth waiting for, there’s, film, DJ recordings, canvas’s photo stills, sculpture, TV and poetry, so something for everyone.
From collaborations with Warhol to Haring to name but a few, this fascinating and inspiring show captures the essence of Basquiat, the 1980s and the life of a self-taught NYC artist just getting into his stride and who thankfully left a legacy that has since influenced the world.
Don’t miss it! Highly recommended: The exhibition runs until 28th January 2018
