The Neo Naturists
Studio Voltaire, 1A Nelsons Row, London SW4 7JR
Back to the 80s, the early 80s and a varied collection of pieces that may make you raise an eyebrow! The Neo Naturists were a live art collective initiated in 1981 and born out of the Punk era of the 70s with a little bit of New Romantic thrown in for good measure.
An eclectic group of artists, designers, singers and dancers of the time, some originating at St Martin’s Art College, the Neo Naturists used body painting and film as a way of exploring body image and identity, living art that was taken out and onto the streets and paraded at the coolest London clubs and parties of the time, quickly getting them noticed and recognised as serious artists.
Some of these cool experimental club kids even went onto become household names in their own right: BodyMap, Leigh Bowery, Michael Clark, Boy George, Simon Foxton, Andrew Logan, Grayson Perry, Genesis P.Orridge, Psychic TV, Derek Jarman, Princess Julia, Marilyn, Philip Sallon, Test Department, Jill Westwood to name but a few.
Videos, photographs and artefacts are all used to guide you through the experience of the Neo Naturists, with some pieces on loans from companies such as The BFI, Michael Clarks Company and Grayson Perry’s own collection, an hour of your day should cover this little exhibition off, its free and it will keep you entertained.
