Snuggled away on one of Shoreditch’s remaining quiet streets sits Oklava and according to the owners it offers ‘dishes with the potential to change lives’. I’m not sure it changed our lives but it definitely hit the spot, in a very good way, offering a really interesting and innovative slant on the normal traditional Turkish Cypriot cuisine, the venue, the food and the staff were ALL perfect and we would go back to Oklava in a heartbeat.

From dishes that contain pomegranate, aubergines and pistachio nuts to delicious pides (Turkish pizza) to name but a few, you will experience a modern taste sensation and so refreshing to taste traditional cuisine in a manner that is new, exciting and contemporary without a single kebab in sight! Kebabs are great but this was just a breath of fresh air.

With its open style kitchen, limited amount of table seating and bar stools, this place feels very intimate, freshly decorated and with clean lines, you don’t wait long for your dishes (a selection of small palates but not ‘too’ small) delicious drink options from local beers to a wide selection of wines and cocktails. Our waitress offered an extra special service, was wonderfully warm and created a much appreciated relaxed and informal atmosphere.

If you don’t like sitting on a high bar stool, at the counter, you had better request a table or book in advance, the place is small, perfectly formed and cannot accommodate many, so, you have been warned.

If we were to summarise with one word, then it would be wonderful.
